Bora Bora island, located at the northwestern edge of the Society archipelago represents the upper part of a shield volcano made up of a pile of meter-thick alkali basalt flows and rare hawaiites.

Lying in the South Pacific, some km ( miles) SW of San Francisco, the Society Islands cover an area of ca. km2( sq mi). They are administered by France. They represent a km ( The most recognized archipelago is the Society Islands.

This exotic group, with the alluring names of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Maupiti, has for many years captured the attention of romantics, and summoned them to it's shores. We will be traveling to Tahiti in July. We will be doing an 11 day Windstar cruise of French Polynesia and the Tuamotu Islands.

But we will also have time on land. We will stay a total of 4 nights in Papeete, 3 nights pre cruise on Moorea, and 3 nights post cruise on Bora have our lodging but would love a good guide book for maps, activities, restaurants, etc.

Geography. The islands are divided, both geographically and administratively, into two groups: The islands became a French protectorate in and a colony in under the name of French Establishments of Oceania (Établissements Français d'Océanie, EFO).

They have a population ofinhabitants (as of Archipelago: Polynesia. The main island of Babeldaob (78% of the total land area) comprises in part old-weathered continental rocks that have been the source of some gold. Between 50 and 27 Ma, the Kyushu–Palau Ridge was a very active volcanic arc (Sdrolias et al.

) formed above the westward subducting Pacific by: Tahaa, Raiatea, Bora Bora, and Tupai Atolls, Pacific Ocean This chain of coral fringed islands forms the Leeward Island chain within the French Society Islands.

At bottom right are the islands of Tahaa and Raiatea. They are old, eroded volcanos, fringed by a coral reef. Back in when Marcia's book came out, the Leeward Islands (Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora, Maupiti, etc) still hadn't developed into the popular charter cruising zones they are today.

Thus the Leewards get only 86 pages in the book while the Windwards (Tahiti and Moorea) get /5(4). Bora Bora is a km2 island group in the Leeward group in the western part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of the French Republic in the Pacific Ocean.

The main island, located about kilometres northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia Archipelago: Society Islands.

Tetiaroa. The Leeward Islands (Iles sous le Vent) consist of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti, and the atolls of Tupai, Mopelia, Scilly and Bellinghausen (Galzin and Pointier, ). The Society Islands are one of five island groups that make up French Polynesia. The Tuamotu Islands (or Dangerous Archipelago) consist of   Before traveling to Tahiti I read the first two novels in the 3-part series by Tahitian author Celestine Hitiura Vaite and I read the third one while I was there.

The first book, "Breadfruit", was written a little simply and the main character got a little annoying to me at times, but the next two books,"Frangipani" and "Tiare in Bloom",were better written.

Borabora, one of the Society Islands, represents the eroded remnants of a once more extensive volcano. Ellipsoidal structures in the lavas extend from sea-level to nearly 2, feet elevation. The flows are cut by a series of highly vesicular, vertical dikes, striking radially outward from the old by: 6.

Bora Bora is surrounded by a colorful coral reef that protects it from the large waves of the Pacific. It is one of the Society Islands, part of French Polynesia, and one of many volcanic islands scattered across the South Pacific. The dream destination of Bora Bora just begs to have its picture taken, with lush peaks, white sand beaches, and romantic lagoons.

But perhaps Bora Bora’s most iconic image that of Mount Otemanu, with its jagged, emerald-hued peaks rising high above the shoreline. With only 4, inhabitants and a laid-back, island vibe, visitors to this beautiful corner of the world can’t.

Bora Bora Location, History, and Economy. First of all, the astoundingly magnificent location known simply as Bora Bora formed in a comparatively isolated location. It further forms part of the Leeward Group, which represents a western part of the Society Islands.

Answer 1 of 5: Hi everyone! We just booked our dream vacation for 3 weeks to Bora Bora, Moorea, Le Teha, and Tahiti for this December!

I love reading books about islands and places I am going to visit! Ant recommendations? I'm not huge on history type.
